The earliest of the museum’s Budd Company cars was built in 1948 for the Santa Fe Railway. Like observation car No. 3197, diner No. 1550 was built for use on El Capitan. The popularity of the route led El Capitan to use two dining cars per train. Lunch counter diners like No. 1550 supplemented Santa Fe’s more formal conventional dining cars and provided economy meal service. Passengers dined on Fred Harvey’s recipes at the 14-seat lunch counter or the 20-seat dining section.

In 1956, Santa Fe introduced High-Level cars, and the No. 1550 could then be found on the Texas Chief and Grand Canyon, as well as other secondary trains, providing economy dining facilities on busy summer trains. The car became surplus to Santa Fe in 1967 and was sold for private use. It became a catfish restaurant outside of Houston. Little in the way of alterations were made to the car and it was sold again after closure of the restaurant. It remains remarkably intact and original, maintaining most of its 1948 appearance. The museum purchased the car in 2005.
